Archery
Archery is the practice of using a bow to shoot arrows. Archery has ancestrally been used in hunting and has become a precision sport. A person practicing archery is called an archer, and one who likes it or is an expert at archery is called a toxophillite. Archery has played a great role in mythology be it of the Greeks or the Germanian, Indian or Roman.
Who does not remember Robin Hood-the legendary hero and also Cupid- the Greek god of love and of course the great-Arjuna of the Mahabharata- the longest epic of Indian culture. If anyone tries to recollect their picture, one thing which will be seen common to all of them is the bow and arrow which they will be seen carrying with them.
The equipments that are used in archery are different kinds of bows, different kinds of arrows, bow strings; protective equipments etc…Different kinds of bows include the long bow, flat bow, compound bow, and recurve bow. Of these recurve bow is the one which has been used in the game of Olympics. In archery the thumb plays a main role and protective equipments like the leather tab or glove or thumb ring is used.
Archery can be classified into various types like the target archery, field archery which involves shooting targets at varying distance, 3D archery which involves shooting at life-size models for games it is very famous with the hunters and many others like flight archery, clout archery, and ski archery.
Archery usually involves aiming at something and this aiming generally involves two techniques Instinctive and Sight shooting. Instinctive shooting involves a co-ordination between the eyes and the bow. It requires huge concentration and practice while Sight shooting method uses pins on the side of a bow to be adjusted for different distances. Archery also involves a lot of physics. Bows function by converting elastic potential energy into kinetic energy of the arrow. In this process, some energy is dissipated through elastic hysteresis, reducing the overall amount released when the bow is shot.
Archery has acquired a greater importance in sports. There have been many sports organized like Archery Meteksan World Cup, the Olympic Games, World University Championship and many others. Many records have been set in these games by great players.
A new program has been developed in US schools called the National Archery In School Program (NASP) in order to completely train the students who are interested in archery.
